Minister of National Defence Nikos Dendias Attends 60th Munich Security Conference

On Friday, 16 February 2024, the Minister of National Defence, Nikos Dendias, attended the 60th Munich Security Conference, where he had a series of important contacts, meeting, among others, with:

  • The President of Latvia, Edgars Rinkēvičs.

  • The EU Special Representative for the Gulf, Luigi Di Maio, with whom he discussed the security situation in the broader Gulf region and Operation “ASPIDES” in the Red Sea.

  • The EU Commissioner for Climate Action and former Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Netherlands, Wopke Hoekstra.

  • The former US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and the US Assistant Secretary of State for Energy Resources Geoffrey Pyatt.

  • The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Egypt Sameh Shoukry, with whom he had a cordial meeting.

  • The External Affairs Minister of India, Dr. Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, with whom he exchanged views on the important security challenges and the importance of the cooperation between Greece and India, with a view to promote stability in the broader region.

  • The Minister of National Defence of Canada Bill Blair, with whom he discussed enhancing defence cooperation, both at the bilateral and NATO level, and stressed the importance of the Greek Diaspora in Canada for the close ties of friendship between the two countries.

  • The Minister of Defence of Montenegro Dragan Krapović, with whom he confirmed the excellent level of our defence relations and discussed their further enhancement.

  • The Minister of Foreign Affairs and former Chancellor of Austria Alexander Schallenberg and the former Minister of Foreign Affairs of Austria Michael Linhart.

  • The Secretary for Relations with States of the Vatican, Archbishop P.R. Gallagher.

  • The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Malta Ian Borg.

  • The Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology of the United Arab Emirates, Dr Sultan Bin Ahmed Al Jaber, with whom he stressed the importance of the Greece – UAE strategic partnership.

  • The Minister of Foreign Affairs of North Macedonia Bujar Osmani.

  • The CEO of Lockheed Martin James D. Taiclet, with whom he discussed the F-35 fighter aircraft and the progress of the F-16 Viper upgrade.

  • The former US Secretary of Defence, General James Mattis, with whom he discussed the importance of the Greece – US strategic cooperation for dealing with common challenges in the broader region.

  • The Chairman of the GLOBSEC Board of Directors, former Vice-Chancellor of Austria Wilhelm Molterer.
